This former ballroom’s clerestory space was left open at the building perimeter in order to allow light as to penetrate to the interior classrooms. A continuous, self-bracing, curve of glass forms the varying dimensions needed for the classrooms while widening the balcony to create a lobby/reception area. Existing concrete girders penetrate the glass wall to form the locations of classroom entrances. Between the beams, low-cost wire mesh ceiling panels screen mechanical services while allowing relief from the low ceiling heights. In acknowledgment of the limited project budget, mass market furnishings and light fixtures were used throughout. Library tables were salvaged and refinished.
